It's Summertime, And The Living Is Easy...

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and as I did last year, I'd like to post a song that makes me think of the sizzling months before us. In '09, I chose The Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff classic, "Summertime". This time, I'm picking "Summertime", sung snazzily by American Idol season 3 winner Fantasia. Enjoy!

As much as I have listened to Fantasia's music, and admire her triumph over those unfortunate teen years, I have never heard this song....

But I have heard Jazzy Jeff $ The Fresh Prince's version. I remember standing in the living room of my then-girlfriend's home and watching the video, as if it happened yesterday.

Who would have ever believed that rapper Will Smith would one day become a top-grossing movie star?

Not me. And I remember the video's premiere... I sat transfixed at the sheer coolness of it. I fell in love at age 9. That's why every Memorial Day, I have to start the summer off right playing the Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff!

I chose Fantasia's song because I was in a jazz mood this past week. It also has a VERY long history. It comes from the classic musical "Porgy & Bess". It was first performed in the 30's and the music was written by George Gershwin. It was groundbreaking since it starred an all Black cast.

In 1959, it became a movie starring Dorothy Dandridge.

The soundtrack has been done by Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.

So when Fantasia took to the "American Idol" stage and SANG this song, I took notice. So did Simon Cowell, who recently said that it still rates as the best "Idol" performance he's seen.

Thus ends "Alisha's Musical History Moment".
